Skerries first XV’s aim to secure a first AIL #EnergiaAIL victory over Clogher Valley will extend into 2027, after they lost out by 19-24 in their round four meeting at Holmpatrick yesterday afternoon.
With Storm Boelo making its mark on proceedings, it’s a credit to both teams that they scored seven tries between then, and served up such an absorbing contest.
Playing into the notorious east coast wind in the first half, the home side got off to an impressive start, as Ronan Mulcahy was offered a one-one-one off a set scrum inside the 22 and he didn’t need a second a second invitation.
Jack Litchifield’s conversion was off-target in the swirling wind but Skerries had a 5-0 lead after only eight minutes.
Clogher Valley hit back to equalise a few minutes later but the home side dusted themselves down and got back on the attack almost immediately, with Mikey Sherlock eventually barrelling over in trademark fashion and this time Litchfield nailed the difficult conversion for 12-5.
Skerries had a further chance to extend the lead but the final pass didn't go to hand in testing conditions. and instead, the Clogher Valley scrum began to gain the upper hand.
From that platform, they played for territory and, despite a couple of strong defensive stands initially, they crashed over for a second unconverted try just before the half-time break.
Heading into the second period with a two-point lead and the wind at their backs, things were looking good for Skerries, but unfortunately, they struggled to build any significant momentum.
Crucially, Clogher Valley struck for converted tries in the 58th and 73rd minutes to put 12 points between the sides.
Finally gaining some territory, an attacking lineout maul set the platform for Rob McKey’s impressive finish past his opposite man and Mulcahy’s outrageous conversion from the right-hand touchline left it all to play for in the last couple of minutes.
Another push deep into the Clogher Valley 22 provided a grandstand finish but Skerries couldn't create another score and the visitors held out for the win.
Sincere thanks to all those who braved the conditions to support on Saturday, to sponsors, Linesight, Halligan O'Connor and Progressive Credit Union, and to Mick Donoghue and Gerry Weldon for the photos.
Next up for Skerries is a maiden visit to Enniskillen for round 5 next Saturday.
